Post-Brexit Update: EU ski seasons are now extremely difficult for UK citizens. Before Brexit, 25,000+ Brits worked French ski seasons. Now, employers must prove no suitable candidate exists among 500 million EU nationals. We focus on working holiday ski resort destinations where you can actually secure a visa and build a seasonaire career.

Success Stories from Our Community

Real experiences from young adults who've successfully planned and completed their ski season gap years with guidance from Slopes & Seasons.

Ollie Thompson

"I went to Japan for the powder, not the job. Started as a lifty because I didn't have instructor qualifications. The resort offered free CSIA training mid-season - by February I had completed my level 1 and I was teaching kids' classes. The language barrier was rough at first, but the Japanese staff were patient. Earned less than my mates in Canada but the experience was unreal. Still can't believe I got paid to ski that powder."

Key Achievement

Went from zero qualifications to Level 1 instructor in 8 weeks, all while learning some basic Japanese

Ski Instructor (former liftie)

Niseko, Japan • Winter 2023-2024

Priya Sharma

"I quit my London marketing job at 27—everyone thought I was mad. Spent my savings on the flight, arrived with no plan. Started washing dishes at a Queenstown hotel, ended up managing their ski shuttle bookings by August. The pay was average but I skied Coronet Peak every morning before work. Best decision I ever made, even if my mum still doesn't understand why."

Key Achievement

Promoted from kitchen hand to operations coordinator in 3 months; funded 6 months of travel afterwards

Priya Sharma

Hospitality Manager

Queenstown, New Zealand • Winter 2024 (June-Oct)

Connor O'Brien

"Didn't get the IEC visa first time—devastating. Spent a summer saving, applied again, got in. Worked night shifts at a Calgary Tim Hortons for 6 weeks before the season started just to afford gear. Started teaching kids' ski school at Sunshine Village, barely knew what I was doing. By March I had regular private clients. If you're reading this and got rejected: apply again. It's worth it."

Key Achievement

Second-time IEC applicant; built private lesson client base from zero to 12 regulars in one season

Ski Instructor

Banff, Canada • Winter 2024-2025

Why Trust Our Advice?

We focus on realistic options backed by data, not theoretical possibilities.

The numbers behind our recommendations:

  • Canada IEC 2025: In 2025, UK citizens have access to a significant allocation of IEC spots, but competition is fierce — we track every invitation round so you know the real odds
  • France post-Brexit: Before Brexit, UK citizens regularly worked French ski seasons. Now, work permits take 18+ months even for experienced executives with job offers
  • Australia 2024: UK citizens benefit from the UK-Australia Free Trade Agreement — a major advantage other nationalities don't have

Our information comes from:

  • Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) — official IEC program data
  • Australian Government Department of Home Affairs — Working Holiday visa requirements
  • Immigration New Zealand — visa quotas and processing times
  • Japan Ministry of Foreign Affairs — Working Holiday agreements
  • BASI (British Association of Snowsport Instructors) — qualification recognition and industry hiring trends
  • Direct feedback from ski resort HR departments who share post-Brexit hiring realities

What we can't predict

Visa processing times fluctuate. Quotas change. New agreements emerge (like the UK-Australia FTA 2024). We update our guides monthly, but always verify current requirements with official sources before applying. Use our guides as your starting point, not your final authority.

Why we don't list EU countries as realistic options

Post-Brexit, UK citizens are third-country nationals. French employers must prove no suitable candidate exists among 500 million EU nationals before hiring a Brit. In practice, this means near-zero approvals for seasonal ski work. We'd rather direct you to Andorra (same Pyrenees mountains, accessible visas) than waste your time on theoretical French permits.

Last major updates: Canada IEC age 35 (July 2024), Australia no-specified-work requirement removed (July 2024), Italy 90-day uncertainty (February 2026).

Why Slopes & Seasons Exists

Planning a ski season from the UK has become more complicated in recent years. Visa rules have shifted, opportunities can be hard to compare, and much of the advice online is either outdated or heavily tied to course providers.

Slopes & Seasons was created to bring clear, independent guidance into one place — helping UK seasonaires understand their options and plan with confidence.

Less forum digging. More mountain time.
