As of July 2024, UK citizens aged 18-35 can now apply. Previously the limit was 30.
UK citizens can now participate in the IEC program twice: 24 months + 12 months = up to 36 months total in Canada.
Flagpoling (US border activation) is no longer permitted. You must activate your work permit by flying directly to Canada and presenting your POE letter at a Canadian port of entry (airport border).
First Participation: Fly to Canada and activate at airport border with your POE letter (standard method).
Second Participation: Submit your application via IRCC Web Form by mail while already in Canada on your first permit. Processing time: 5 business days.
IEC program fee now CAD $184.75 (was lower). Open work permit fee: CAD $100. Biometrics: CAD $85. Total estimated: CAD $370-470.
UK citizens now have three IEC streams available:
Working Holiday: 9,330 spots (2026 season). Most popular for ski season workers. No job offer required. Highly competitive - 7,976 invitations issued, 482 candidates remaining in pool, 3,742 spots available.
Young Professionals: 320 spots. Requires pre-arranged job offer in skilled occupation. Less competition, faster processing.
International Co-op: 50 spots. For students requiring work placement. Not typically relevant for ski instructors.
Enter the IEC pool and wait for an Invitation to Apply (ITA). Check your email regularly. Your ITA is valid for 10 days. This stage can take weeks to months depending on the random draw.
Accept your ITA and submit all required documents: passport, proof of funds, medical insurance, police certificates (if required), and biometrics. IRCC reviews your application and issues a Port of Entry (POE) Introduction Letter. Processing time: 4-6 weeks for complete applications.
Fly to Canada and present your POE letter at a Canadian port of entry (airport border). Immigration officers will issue your work permit. You are now legally authorized to work in Canada for the duration specified on your permit.
Total Timeline: 4-6 months from pool entry to activation. This varies based on invitation timing and application completeness.
Register on the Government of Canada's IEC portal. Verify your eligibility and create your profile with personal and passport information.
Submit your profile to enter the random draw pool. Pools typically open in December for the following year. You'll receive a confirmation number.
Invitations are issued throughout the year via random draws. Check your email regularly. You have 10 calendar days to accept an invitation.
Accept your invitation and submit required documents: valid passport, proof of funds (CAD $2,500+), medical insurance, and police certificates if applicable.
Book and attend your biometrics appointment at a Visa Application Centre (VAC) in the UK (London, Manchester, or Edinburgh). Cost: approx £45.
If requested, complete a medical exam with an approved panel physician. Cost approximately CAD $150-200. Results sent directly to IRCC.
If required, obtain police certificates from countries where you've lived for 6+ months. Processing time varies by country. Police certificates must be less than 6 months old at time of work permit application submission. For UK: ACRO certificate. Order once invited to ensure validity.
Once approved, you'll receive a Port of Entry (POE) Introduction Letter. This is NOT your visa — you must present it at the border to receive your work permit.

How to avoid: Enter the pool as soon as it opens (December). The earlier you enter, the better your chances of being invited before your desired start date.
How to avoid: Remember: Entering the pool ≠ getting a visa. You must be invited, then submit documents, then get approved. This takes 4-6 months total.
How to avoid: Ensure your medical insurance covers the full duration of your stay in Canada. Travel insurance often has gaps — get a dedicated policy.
How to avoid: Biometrics are mandatory. If you miss your appointment, you may be rejected. Schedule it immediately when invited and set reminders.
How to avoid: Your POE letter expires. Activate your visa by entering Canada before the expiry date. Remember: flagpoling is banned — activate at the border or inland office.
How to avoid: If required, apply for police certificates early. Some countries take months to issue them. Check IRCC's requirements for your situation.
How to avoid: Your work permit will be tied to your insurance coverage duration. If you present 12-month insurance for a 24-month eligible stay, you receive only a 12-month permit. Cannot extend later. Purchase full 24-month coverage upfront to maximize your stay.
How to avoid: Bank statement must be issued no more than 7 days before departure for Canada. Border officers can refuse entry or shorten permit if financial evidence is outdated. Get fresh statement just before flying.
Pool to Invitation: Variable (weeks to months). Invitation to POE Letter: 4-6 weeks for complete applications. Total timeline: 4-6 months from pool entry to activation. Note: 2 weeks is only the final processing stage, not the total time.
Pools opened December 2025 for the 2026/2027 season. As of February 2026, only 3,742 spots remain from the 9,330 quota. If you're targeting a late 2026 ski season, apply immediately. Waiting until summer significantly reduces your chances of being invited before your desired start date.
IEC holders can work for any employer in Canada. However, ski resorts appreciate:
Your work permit allows you to leave and re-enter Canada multiple times. You can visit home at Christmas or Easter without losing your work permit status, as long as you return before it expires.
